In cooperation with the Public Health Foundation Enterprises and a small group of consultants, Marga is working with First 5 LA to broaden efforts to ensure the healthy development of children in Los Angeles County from prenatal up to age five. Part of a statewide approach to early childhood development and school readiness, First 5 organizations were created by voter approved revenues from a California tax on tobacco products. First 5 LA is charged with implementing a wide range of programs for children and their families in Los Angeles County.
In line with our mission to bring resources and partnerships to bear for the greater good, Marga is specifically helping to shape a new line of grantmaking at First 5 LA informed by best practices in capacity building, advocacy, and policy. The partnership element for this project is strong as the focus is on making it possible for a greater number of institutions, coalitions, and other groups to support the development of healthy children and families in the Los Angeles area as grantees of First 5 LA.
This project complements the work Marga is also doing with regard to the education pipeline for the Kellogg Foundation (see Strengthening the Education Pipeline – include link), focusing on organizations that contribute to educational development at an early age.
