Strategic Collaboration with CEOs for Cities

Marga’s emerging strategic collaboration with CEOs for Cities continues to develop, marrying aspects of the Marga Method for seeding, growing, and nurturing partnerships with a national cross-sector network of urban leaders. In 2007, this Marga/CEOs for Cities collaboration is apparent in a couple of exciting ways.

First of all, CEOs for Cities is this year’s client of Maurrasse’s Columbia University class, “Cross Sector Partnerships, Philanthropy, and Community Building”. In its third year, this class explores current approaches to leveraging various resources to tackle critical social concerns. With a mission to leverage the capacity of urban assets improve cities, CEOs for Cities is an ideal partner to this class, in which students are identifying the potential contributions of hospitals, museums, and other key institutions in urban areas.

Based on Harvard professor Michael Porter’s approach to unearthing the competitive advantage of cities and their assets, CEOs for Cities galvanized a national network of CEOs of major institutions of all types to forge a contemporary urban agenda. Another important dimension of Marga’s partnership with this monumental effort is our assistance in the development of CEOs for Cities’ conference of urban leaders on May 2, 2007, hosted by the City of San Jose and San Jose State University.

In preparation for this historic meeting, Marga is composing a paper to clarify the ways in which urban anchor institutions, like hospitals and museums, can forge pathways to make greater contributions to their host cities in alignment with their priorities. Marga will facilitate strategic dialogue at the San Jose conference and document some of the event’s major conclusions. Playing the role of partnership catalyst, Marga hopes to bring strategic thinking, research, facilitation, and other forms of assistance to assist this network of urban CEOs shape a concrete national vision to make the best possible uses of the many resources contained in major cities.
